 The Meaning of Morphology

A.     The Meaning Of Morphology
Morphology is the study of the forms of words and the ways in which words are related to other words of the same language.
1.       Lexicon
Lexicon is the filling cabinet drawer for how words are put together and what the meanings of this different parts are
2.      word.
Word is the smallest free form found in language. Example, Pen, buys, money, etc
a.  Simple Words
Simple words contain I Morpheme only.Example; pen, study, teach
b.   Complex Words  contain more than I Morpheme. Example;
o   Lecturer ( Lecturer contains 2 Morphemes = Lecture + er )
o   Books ( books contain 2 Morphemes = book + s )
3.      Morpheme
Morpheme is An abstract element of meaning, which may be free in that it takes the form of an independent word, or bound in that it is incorporated into a word as a dependent part Morpheme is the smallest unit of language that carries information about meaning of  function. Example;
-          Replay  ( replay has 2 Morphemes : re- and play)
-          kids ( kid have 2 Morphemes : kid and –s )
-          conditions ( conditions have 3 Morphemes : condity –ion and –s )

a.   Free Morpheme
Free Morpheme is  An element of meaning which takes the form of an independent word all by itself. Example; chair, pen, study book, etc.
